Abstract:

The collection consists of ninety-five cartons of prisoner case files, acquired by the UC Berkeley Law School's Center for the Study of Law and Society from the California Department of Corrections in 1978-1979 and transferred to The Bancroft Library in 1991. The case files include records for prisoners in San Quentin, Folsom, and the California Institution for Women (at Tehachapi) penitentiaries. They are sequentially arranged by case number. The collection also includes photocopies of minutes of the meeting of the Board of Trustees, California Institution for Women, Tehachapi, circa 1929-1951 and a statistical analysis entitled, "California Long-Term Prison Study," which was run in 1980 at University of California, Santa Barbara.
The collection also includes the digital files and the analog codebook for a data set created by noted UC Berkeley criminologists Sheldon L. Messinger and John E. Berecochea. The data set, entitled New Admissions to California Prisons, is based on the information in these prisoner case files as well as in state prison registers. The code book shows the frequencies of the over 200 variables recorded in the data sample.

This set of case files seems to consist of files not transferred by the Department of Corrections to the California State Archives for permanent retention. The State Archives sampled California prison case files and, for the date span listed, retained only those files created on decade years (1920, 1930, etc.) and no files created between decade years. The files not selected for retention by the State Archives appear to have been sent to the UC Berkeley School of Law by the Department of Corrections for preservation. Documentation of this transfer of records from the Department of Corrections to the UC Berkeley Law School has not been located.
Transferred from the University of California Berkeley School of Law; September 1991.
